Recommended Reef Tank Systems

At The Maine Reef, our goal is making the salt water aquarium hobby affordable and sustainable.

Affordable means not only low cost fish and corals, but also being able to pay your electric and water bills down the road.

Sustainable means not only protecting our natural reefs, but insuring that reefers can maintain and enjoy their systems for years without breaking the bank.

Below are 3 different saltwater reef tank setups, ranging in price from low to high. Many people today are looking at not only the initial cost of a tank, but also what it will cost to maintain down the road.  All of these tanks make a great looking and functional saltwater or reef aquarium, and in our opinion are the best value for the money.

When choosing a tank for a saltwater aquarium, the more surface area the better. Therefore low, flat, wide tanks are much better than tall thin tanks. These tanks were picked with this in mind, and also because they provide pleasing viewing appearance.

With today's technology, bigger is not always better, especially when you figure in long term maintenance costs. However if the cost is not an issue, a bigger tank will always be easier to maintain, as the greater volume adds to the stability of the system, as well as increasing the number of fish and corals you can add.

Many other tank sizes are can also be used successfully for a saltwater aquarium, but in our opinion these are the best choices for beginners. They are also easy to maintain and stock if properly set up.

All of the equipment below can be purchased through The Maine Reef or our affiliate partner Drs. Foster & Smith.  Product links are provided for your convenience below. Please help us keep your prices low by shopping for all your pet needs at Drs. Foster & Smith through this website.
